The latest variant on the Phat Boy theme, and perhaps the most useful and exciting. An eye catching trumpet that sounds as Phat as it looks. There have been attempts over the years to produce Trumpet/Flugel hybrids with various degrees of success. This doesn’t attempt that. This is just a big Phat huge thick sounding trumpet.

Incredibly warm played softly and with a dark growl when pushed. The big bell gives a wide spread of sound, perfect for those smaller acoustic gigs. A wonderful Jazz soloing instrument. Ideal for ballad playing, blues playing, smooth jazz playing, indeed any style that requires a smoother more laid back approach.

Supremely comfortable to hold. The weight emphasis pushed back a little from a regular trumpet and the valve section a bit closer to the face, it’s a bit more like holding a perfectly balanced European style Cornet. It will accept regular trumpet mouthpieces.

This could be ‘the’ trumpet for those more intimate restaurant gigs that many of you now play with a pianist and possibly bass player as well. Indeed any venue when the audience is right up against you and a regular trumpet is just tooo much! Great for aspiring Freddie Hubbards or Chet Bakers. Sure, it wont turn you into a great supercool horn player, but if you’re loving the sound you make, it make those licks flow out so much easier!

Due to the success of the Phat Boy Flugel horn I have been asked to produce a few one of a kind variations of the Phat Boy theme. Below are a couple of examples of this. The 4 Valve Phat Boy, with a 2 ½ tone 4th valve, and one of my favourite custom instruments. The Eb Tenor ‘Phatter Boy’, commissioned by top UK French horn player Pip Eastop.

Pip came to me saying playing Jazz on a tenor horn sounds nice but doesn’t look cool, what can you do with the Phat Boy concept to make it work in Eb. Check out the results (Yes, that is a hybrid French horn rimmed tenor horn mouthpiece in there! After all, Pip IS principally a French horn player).

The stand was another first. It enables Pip to use it on a stand if he wants to. Simple yet very effective. One end screws securely on to the valve casing and the other end has a standard camera thread. Pip then screws it to a folding monopod. This makes for an easily portable system and most importantly the freedom to move that a regular three legged stand would not give.

These will be made on a limited basis due to it being a special function horn and priced the same as the Phat Boy Flugel.
